Are the animals harmed to make the brushes?
No. The horsehair is clipped, just like when a horse is trimmed - it doesn't hurt, and the hair grows back. The boar bristles are a byproduct of animals already slaughtered for meat. Not a single animal is killed to make a toothbrush.
Don't natural bristles get unhygienic?
Natural bristles dry slower than nylon. That's the honest difference - and it's easy to manage. The care is exactly the same as dentists recommend for any toothbrush: rinse thoroughly after use, shake off water, and place it with the bristles facing up and air circulating around it, not in a closed case or a damp drawer. This keeps it dry between brushings. The replacement schedule is also the same: every three months. The difference is what you put in your mouth in the meantime.
Is there glue in it - how do the bristles stay in place?
No. No glue, no dyes, no coatings. The bristles are inserted into drilled holes in the bamboo head and mechanically fastened - exactly as toothbrushes were made for over a hundred years before nylon and glue took over. This is also why the entire brush can be composted afterwards: there's nothing artificial to separate first.
What happens when it's worn out?
It can go directly into the compost pile. The entire brush - handle, bristles, and packaging - will decompose in about six months and return as soil. You don't have to remove anything or sort anything out. Compare that to a plastic brush, which will remain long after you've forgotten it.
Does it leave microplastic in the mouth?
No. The bristles are 100% natural hair, so there's no nylon to shed plastic fibers. That's the difference between us and a bamboo brush where only the handle has been replaced - the bristles are still plastic.
What's the difference between boar bristles and horsehair?
Firmness. Boar bristles are the firm choice - providing the thorough, effective cleaning you know from a medium toothbrush. Horsehair is softer and more gentle, and is what you should choose if you have sensitive gums or simply prefer a light brushing. Both are 100% natural hair without a single gram of plastic. Is natural hair more disgusting than nylon?
No. The bristles are boiled and sterilised before being put into the brush. They absorb more water than nylon, so rinse the brush after use and stand it with the bristles facing upwards, so it dries between each use.
Where do the hairs come from?
Horsehair is cut from the mane, boar bristles come from the back. Both are by-products of the food industry, so no animal is killed for a toothbrush. SELVA is not vegan, and we prefer to state that directly rather than sugar-coating it.
Should I choose soft or firm?
If in doubt, choose soft. Horsehair is silky soft and designed for sensitive teeth and tender gums. Firm is boar bristles with more resistance, for those who are used to feeling the brush.
How long does a SELVA last?
Six to eight weeks, like a regular toothbrush. Replace it when the bristles start to spread. Four in the pack last about half a year.
Can the entire brush be composted?
The bamboo handle can, and the bristles break down by themselves. The box is unbleached cardboard and goes in the paper recycling. If you cut off the bristles first, the handle degrades faster.
