Are the animals harmed to make the bristles?
The horsehair is cut, just like trimming a horse — it does not hurt, and the hair grows back. If you want to avoid animal hair entirely, the vegan version is made of bamboo fibre, not animals.
Aren't natural bristles unhygienic?
Natural bristles dry more slowly than nylon. That is the honest difference — and it is easy to handle. The care is exactly what dentists recommend for any toothbrush: rinse thoroughly after use, shake off the water, and stand it with the bristles up and air around it, not in a closed case or a damp drawer. That keeps it dry between brushes. The replacement is easy to remember: after six to eight weeks, or when the bristles start to splay.
Is there glue in it — how do the bristles stay in?
No. No glue, no dyes, no coatings. The bristles are set into drilled holes in the bamboo head and held mechanically — exactly the way toothbrushes were made for over a hundred years, before nylon and glue took over. It is also why the whole brush can be composted afterwards: there is nothing artificial to separate out first.
What does shipping cost?

What happens when it is worn out?
It can go straight on the compost heap. The whole brush — handle, bristles and packaging — breaks down in about six months and is back to soil. You do not have to pull anything off or sort anything out. Compare that with a plastic brush, which is still lying there long after you have forgotten it.
Does it leave microplastic in my mouth?
No. The bristles are 100% natural fibres — horsehair or bamboo fibre — so there is no nylon to shed plastic fibres from. That is the difference between us and most bamboo brushes in the supermarket, where only the handle is bamboo — the bristles are still nylon.
What is the difference between horsehair and vegan?
The firmness and the material. Horsehair is medium: a bit more bite, a thorough clean, and the classic SELVA choice. The vegan one is the soft one: bristles of bamboo fibre, gentle on sensitive gums and 100% plant-based. Neither has any nylon or plastic in it. If you are in doubt, take horsehair — it is still our most tested. If your gums bleed easily, take the vegan one.

Are natural bristles less hygienic than nylon?
No. The bristles are boiled and sterilised before they go into the brush. They absorb more water than nylon, so rinse the brush after use and stand it with the bristles up — then it dries between each time.

Can the whole brush be composted?
The bamboo handle can, and the bristles break down on their own. The box is unbleached cardboard and goes in the paper recycling. Cut the bristles off first and the handle goes faster.
