What's the difference between horsehair and the vegan option?
Only the bristle material. Horsehair is cut from the mane — soft, gentle, and the one we have tested most. The vegan model uses plant fibre instead and brushes almost as softly. Same bamboo handle, same price. If you can't decide, take the horsehair.
Are animals killed to make the brushes?
No. The horsehair is cut from the mane, the same way a horse gets trimmed — it doesn't hurt, and it grows back. It is a by-product of the food industry. If you want to avoid animal products altogether, there is the vegan model.
Aren't natural bristles unhygienic?
Natural bristles dry more slowly than nylon. That's the honest difference, and it's easy to handle: rinse well after brushing, shake the water off, and stand the brush bristles-up with air around it — not in a closed case or a damp drawer. The bristles are boiled and sterilised before they go into the handle.
Is there any glue in the brush?
No. No glue, no dyes, no coatings. The bristles are set into drilled holes in the bamboo head and held mechanically — exactly how toothbrushes were made for over a century before nylon took over.
How long does one brush last?
Six to eight weeks, like any toothbrush. Replace it when the bristles start to splay. Four in a pack covers roughly six months for one person.
Does it leave microplastic in my mouth?
No. The bristles are natural hair or plant fibre, so there is no nylon to shed plastic fibres. That's the difference between us and a bamboo brush where only the handle has changed.
What happens when it's worn out?
The whole brush goes on the compost heap — handle, bristles and box. Nothing has to be pulled off first.
Can my children use them?
The kids' brushes are made for ages 3-8: a smaller head and the softest bristles we make. From age 8 they can use the adult horsehair brush.
Do the toothpaste tablets contain fluoride?
Yes, 1450 ppm — the same level as standard adult toothpaste. Chew one tablet, brush as usual for two minutes, and spit out.
