Materials and animal welfare
Where do the bristles come from, and is the bamboo model animal-free?
The horsehair is cut from the mane and is a by-product of the food industry, so no animal is bred or put down to make a toothbrush. If you prefer to avoid animal products entirely, we have the bamboo model with bristles of bamboo fibre instead of horsehair — 100% plant-based.
Are the bristles cleaned before they go into the brush?
Yes. The horsehair is boiled and sterilised before it is set into the handle. It absorbs more water than nylon, so rinse the brush after use and stand it with the bristles up — then it dries between each use. The bamboo-fibre model doesn't need the same treatment.
What is the brush made of, and can it be composted?
The handle is a single piece of bamboo on both models. The bristles are either horsehair or bamboo fibre, depending on which model you choose — there is no nylon anywhere. The bamboo handle can be composted, and the bristles break down on their own. The box is unbleached cardboard with no plastic film and goes in the paper recycling.
Should I choose horsehair or bamboo?
Horsehair is medium and our most tested — take it if you're in doubt. Bamboo is the soft one: bristles of bamboo fibre, gentle on sensitive gums, and for you who would rather avoid animal products altogether. Both are 100% free of nylon.
Use and durability
How long does a SELVA last?
Six to eight weeks, like an ordinary toothbrush. Replace it when the bristles start to splay. Four in the pack lasts one person around half a year. If you use the electric one, you replace the head roughly every three months.
When will it arrive?
Five to ten days with free shipping and track and trace.

What if I don't like it?
Send it back within 30 days and get your money back — even if you have used it every day. On top of that you have 14 days' right of withdrawal and a 2-year right to complain.
Is there a subscription or any commitment?
No. You can choose regular delivery with a discount if you want to, but a one-off purchase is an entirely ordinary purchase with no commitment.
Which items are on pre-order?
The electric toothbrush, the replacement heads and the kids' toothbrushes are on pre-order — they are in production and not in stock yet. You pay when you order and secure a place in the first production run. We write the moment your parcel is packed, and you can cancel any time before dispatch. Everything else ships as normal in five to ten days.
